Attention Kem Road Animal Hospital ClientsEffective April 2025, Kem Road Animal Hospital has implemented revised protocols for controlled substance prescriptions in compliance with DEA regulations. These changes impact how certain medications for your pets are prescribed and refilled.
Controlled Medications Affected by This UpdateThe following medications prescribed at Kem Road Animal Hospital fall under these protocols:
  • Tramadol
  • Phenobarbital
  • Alprazolam
  • Buprenorphine oral solution
  • Tussigon (Hydrocodone)
  • Gabapentin*
*While Gabapentin is not currently classified as a controlled substance by the DEA, our clinic will apply the same refill protocols to this medication.
Refill Protocol RequirementsUnder the updated DEA guidelines:
  • All controlled prescriptions are limited to 30-60 day quantities
  • Refill requests must be submitted at least 72 hours before pickup
  • Medications cannot be refilled earlier than 5 days before depletion
  • If your pet runs out of medication and is due for an examination, we can provide up to 5 days' worth of medication to bridge until the appointment
Mandatory Examination ScheduleTo maintain compliance with federal regulations:
  1. Pets on controlled substances must be examined by a Kem Road veterinarian every 6 months
  2. Laboratory work is required every 3-6 months, with frequency determined by medication type and individual patient factors
Regulatory ContextThe United States Department of Justice/Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifies controlled substances as chemicals and pharmaceutical agents with potential for abuse. These regulations are designed to ensure appropriate use while preventing misuse.
Our Dedication to Compliance and CareKem Road Animal Hospital is committed to providing exceptional veterinary care while adhering to all regulatory requirements. We appreciate your cooperation as we implement these necessary protocols to remain in compliance with DEA mandates.
For questions regarding these updated procedures, please contact our office directly.
